WHAT IS PILATES?

It is comforting to know that Joseph Pilates the originator of Pilates fitness routine lived to the ripe age of eighty seven, even though as a child, he was frail and sickly. With unmatched determination he experimented with many different approaches, such as yoga, gymnastics, skiing, self-defence, dance, circus training and weight training. By absorbing these other methods and selecting the most effective features, Pilates was able to work out a system which had the perfect balance of strength and flexibility. He trained Scotland Yard detectives in Lancashire and Isle of Man during the First World War. In 1926 he immigrated to the United States with his wife Clara, and as they shared the passion for fitness, they set up a studio in New York, where top ballet dancers, actors and actresses, gymnasts and athletes were all keen to learn from Pilates. Stott-Pilates method is extremely successful because it has developed the work of Joseph Pilates, by incorporating modern theories of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation. It prepares the body for the classical Pilates exercises. We believe that one needs to acquire the skills to perform such exercises gradually. The five basic principles of Stott Pilates ensure that you have an intelligent exercise regime.
